Safe in the Father’s arms!

9 August 2009 2 Comments

What a beautiful portrait to see my daughter coming down from the stairs, with the baby in her arms, and then putting it in the little baby’s chair next to me, with a reassuring voice that “mummy is going to be back soon”, and that “meanwhile grandpa is going to look after you”. What a sense of worthiness it gives me to know that I have a role in this little one’s life, that I’m like a “father figure” that is going to be watching over her!

The baby feels secure to see me there, even as I continue working on my computer, while at the same time keeping a watchful eye to make sure that she’s alright. It all seems so magically peaceful, when the sudden noise of a power drill, used by those who are doing restructuring work in the house, sends what seems like a warning signal of danger to the baby, who doesn’t understand what is going on and starts to cry desperately for help!

I immediately take her into my arms and hold her close to my chest, as I caress her head and start whispering words of love and comfort into her ears, “It’s alright, darling! Don’t be afraid, grandpa is here to hold you and protect you!”

Father arms

As she looks into my smiling face, she immediately stops crying, reassured that there’s no danger in grandpa’s arms! She then smiles back to me and peacefully lays her head on my shoulder, sending me into a heavenly dimension of love and reassurance from my own Father who is in Heaven!
I also feel safe in the Father’s arms.

“The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.” (De.33:27)

How many times we hear “noises” that reach our ears with what seem to us like warning signals of dangers, and we are tempted to fear! There are times when we don’t understand what’s going on, when sudden sounds of noise disrupt that sense of peace and safety that we normally experience while grazing in the fields of pasture under our Shepherd’s watchful eye, and we are afraid and call on our Father’s help! He’s never too far from reaching down to take us into His arms and whisper into our ears His words of love and comfort:

“Fear not; for I am with you: be not dismayed; for I am your God: I will strengthen you; yes, I will help you; yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.” (Isaiah 41:10)

As soon as we hear these reassuring words of life, immediate peace is communicated into our hearts and we know that everything is ok and there’s nothing to fear! What a wonderful sense of safety and security we have, knowing that we are in the Father’s arms!

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the middle of the sea; though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof.” (Psalms 46:1)

We have nothing to be afraid, for we are safe in the Father’s arms!

From my journal after reading this post:
Lord, I love you. I feel so secure. I just read Renato’s blog post about holding his granddaughter in his arms to reassure her when she was frightened. Lord, it was indeed a beautiful picture of the safety and security of your loving arms for us. I am so blessed by that post and the reassurance it brings. That is a picture that we can all relate to having either seen others provide that reassurance for a child or even having been the one doing the reassuring. It truly makes the reality of the unseen real.
Thank you for the reflection, Renato.
    Blessings,
    Jerry
