Being spiritually thirsty is universal!

5 July 2012 No Comment

During our 35 years of missionary experience in many countries around the world, I always tried to study and teach others the Word of God, as it was revealed in the Bible, in order to consolidate a strong foundation of faith upon which to build my life and that of my students. For many of them it was the first time that they ventured in this amazing journey to discover the precious truth contained in God’s Word.

Some eagerly drank from the rivers of living water, flowing from the Word and satisfying the innermost longings of their hearts. Others were fascinated by the prophetic predictions of a wonderful future awaiting mankind, while yet others were excited to learn that we are not victims of a fatal destiny, but that God has given us all the needed tools and resources to build a happy life for us and our children.

No matter in what country we lived, or what was the language or culture of the local people, we soon discovered that the human heart is the same all over the world, and his need for love and respect is no different from ours! Being spiritually hungry and thirsty is universal!

It’s only the fear of rejection, or that others will take away their “certainties”, which leads some to be hostile to foreigners and to barricade themselves behind religious traditions. When the Spirit of God inspired us to unconditionally love the locals, trying to understand and empathize with their problems, they welcomed us with gratitude and respect, not being afraid of us, but being instead intrigued by what might be leading us to leave the comforts of the “rich” West in order to come to and share their less fortunate reality with them.

When they saw our genuine interest in trying to put ourselves in their shoes and share their way of life, this often opened the door for a deeper conversation that made them to want to know the source of our values and even of our faith. Many, through our witness, opened the door of their hearts to Jesus, even though they were of different religions, because He is not the monopoly of just one religion, but the gift of God for all mankind, and “whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved “(Rom. 10:13).

The Bible says that, without exception, “As many as received Him, to them gave He the right to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name: who are born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God “(John 1:12). That’s the same spiritual birth of which Jesus spoke, when talking to an elder of his day: “That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said to you, you must be born again” (John 3:6,7). It’s not a religious, intellectual or cultural choice, but an inner and personal experience that will change and transform your life forever!

And you? Are you born again spiritually, having personally received Jesus into your heart? Jesus says: “Behold, I stand at the door and knock: if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him” (Rev. 3:20). If you haven’t yet done so, you can turn directly to Him at this very moment and invite Him to come in. It’s very simple, just tell him: “Jesus, come into my heart and make me a child of God!”

Remember that, “as many as received Him, to them gave He the right to become the sons of God”, and, “because we are sons, God sent forth the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, Abba, Father” (Gal. 4:6). “He has said, I will never leave you, nor forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5). “I am with you always, even unto the end” (Matt. 28:20).

Then, “if you have tasted that the Lord is good, as a newborn babe desire the spiritual milk of the Word, that you may grow thereby” (1Pet. 2:2,3). To a newborn babe, this should come natural! Just prepare and give him the milk, and he will devour it!

If Jesus lives in your heart, but you haven’t yet found who will prepare the spiritual milk of the Word to help you grow, I want to invite you to the new “Online Bible Training Course” that we are presently preparing for all those who are “not thirsty for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord” (Amos 8:11).
