Ref: A “Call Waiting”!

12 October 2009 4 Comments

With summer gone and fall being under way, we hope that you enjoy finding us here with our Weekly Reflections. There’s not a better time to reflect on the true meaning of our existence but on the weekly “rest day” that God has ordained for our physical, emotional and spiritual wellness, so that we would have time to invest in our communion with Him.

Is it ever happened to you that, while you were at the phone with someone, you heard the beep of a “call waiting” for you, but you were not able to interrupt the conversation in which you were engaged, in order to answer whoever was trying to get in touch with you?

To me it has happened sometimes, and it can be frustrating to afterwards realize that the “call waiting” was of vital importance, but you missed it! Some people know how to put a conversation “on hold” for a moment, in order to answer the other “call waiting”, but I dare say that many of us are still trying to figure out how to do it…

There’s a “call waiting” that you should try not to miss, as it could be of much more and vital importance that you anticipated, and that’s “God’s Call”! You know, for years I wondered what was I in this world for, as I couldn’t remember having anything to do with the decision of being born at the time and place of my birth! Ever since a child I had a deep impression that there had to be a “purpose” or, as some call it, a “destiny” for me to fulfill in this world! As the years went by, that feeling was buried deep under the stressing circumstances of life that leave us little room and time to pay attention to the meaning of our existence on this planet, except when something dramatic happens that makes think and reflect …

It could be a prolonged sickness of a severe nature, or the loss of a dear one, or the trauma of an unexpected tragedy, such as an earthquake, or a hurricane, or a flood or a tsunami … there are all kinds of calamities that can often deprive us of loved ones, or belongings! Life is not always an easy journey, and things don’t always go as smoothly as we had planned! There are obstacles to overcome, and difficulties and complications that we need to learn to manage … but the clock never stops and time goes inexorably by!

Every once in a while such events seem to be sending us the beep of a “Waiting Call” from our Creator, the One who’s responsible for our existence here on earth and trying to get in touch with us, to straighten our path and direct us towards the fulfillment of the true purpose for which we were sent in this world.

The Bible tells us that “all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose.” (Romani 8:28). In other words, “all things”, even the most painful and difficult ones that happen in our lives, “work together for our good”, if we pick up “God’s call” in our lives!

In Bible times there were no phones, much less mobiles, and nowadays we are reluctant to open the door to someone that we don’t immediately recognize. So, what the Bible says about Jesus “standing at the door and knocking”, while patiently waiting for us to hear His voice, and open the door” (Rev. 3:20), could actually be translated in a more modern way: “Behold, I wait on the phone and call: if any man hears My voice and picks up the phone”, I will be able to come into his life and “direct his steps” (Prov. 16:9) towards the fulfillment of his destiny.

Unfortunately the Word of God tells us that, although “many are called, few are chosen” (Matthew 22:14), and I believe that the reason is that, although the phone keeps ringing in the lives of “many”, there are very “few” who are answering “God’s call”! Often we are too engaged in our conversations with others, or with our daily circumstances, so we don’t pay attention to the signaling beep of the “waiting call”!

The sad consequence is that, if we don’t answer God’s call, we’ll never know the purpose that He wants to fulfill in our life, and we’ll never reach the full potential that has been hidden in us. God’s Word tells us that we are “predestinated according to the purpose of Him who works all things after the counsel of His will” (Ephesians 1:11), so we must answer His call and listen to “the counsel of His will”, in order to fulfill the “purpose” that He has for us.

Perhaps you ignored that “waiting call” in your life for so long that you don’t even hear the phone ringing anymore, or you maybe you have been so immersed in other conversations that you heard it too late and now you think that the best of your life has gone by and there’s nothing more that you can fulfill, but that’s not so! Although I first answered God’s call when I was 19 years old, and I tried to serve Him in the following 36 years that have gone by since then, a short while ago I received a new special “Waiting Call”, when a heart attack forced me to “lay down” in green pastures (Psalm 23:2) for almost 3 months!

During that time of rest and recuperation, the Lord showed me that my destiny is not yet totally fulfilled, and that He has in store for me “greater works” (John 14:12) that what I have ever done in the past! In other words, my destiny is not behind me, but it’s still ahead of me! And so it is for you!

If you think that somewhere you lost God’s “call” for your life, don’t wait for a heart attack, or another traumatic event, to discover that your destiny is still ahead of you! Get in touch with God and let Him reveal to you His purposes for your life! Give Him a “call”, and I guarantee you that He will promptly answer you! His phone number is easy to remember, and you can’t forget it: 33.3!

Jeremiah 33:3: “Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you know not.”

Hi Renato, Thanks for this great message and analogy. It reminded me of a devotional message I wrote on Oct 10 at yourdailyblessing.com titled “Let the Spirit flow.” I believe God calls each one of us daily and if we are flowing in the Spirit we will hear the ring, pick up the call, and do what He says. That’s when the Kingdom of God manifests in extraordinary ways. I am so thankful that God crossed our paths and has kept us connected. Blessings to hear and answer God’s daily call! Randy

    Renato!

Such an excellent message! I can so relate, as you know. ;)

I’ve been pondering this topic as well; and I believe that we (God’s children) are prone to selective hearing and/or purposely ignoring what God has called us to do. (pride/rebellion)

I compare it to raising my children – I would like them to obey when I first ask/call them to do what I would like them to do. Some times, my kids are pre-occuppied with friends/tv/etc that they miss my call…and then I need to repeat myself. :) Often, they obey immediately, but there has been times where they have outright disobeyed my call/request.

Is this not what we do to God as well?

As a parent, we are sure to follow through to remind our children of the importance of obedience, so that the job is completed in a timely manner.

Is this not what God does as well?

    Amazing; isn’t it?!!!

I can so relate to your message today; not just in the example of my own children, but in how I have listened/not listened to the promptings of the Holy Spirt.

    Thank you for sharing!!!

    Renato,

Your reflection on A Call Waiting was a very good one. I personally have a hard time putting someone on hold to switch over to call waiting. It feels kind of rude to me. It makes me wonder though what God must think and feel when we aren’t sensitive enough and tuned in to recognize when He is calling us. Or how about when we get so easily distracted when He is trying to get our attention we don’t even respond to Him!

I am so grateful that He doesn’t give up on us. I am also thankful that He was so patient with me until He could finally get through to me and position me to do what He has been calling me to do and that is to write for His glory. There is no “sweeter spot” than to answer HIS CALL and not WAIT and put it off any longer!

I for one am blessed because you have answered His call and are blessing people all over the world with your ministry!
